Fragments of joy is a site-specific performance that springs to life in the evocative atmosphere of the Village des Arts in Dakar, Senegal.  In a city with decreasing green areas, this place is a hidden gem. Walking through its gardens and artists’ studios is as stepping into a parallel universe of quietude and convergences.

Like a stroll through the subconscious, Fragments of joy is fuelled by intuitions and desires: the first ingredients of the creation of life. Like a jazz arrangement, more specifically Ethiopian jazz, it is performed note by note, revealing harmonic dissonances throughout its rhythmic pattern.

With three movements, the audience experiences an immersion through the performance.

The emotion of the sensual poetic verses connects the senses to nature.

The enigmatic figure of Makeda, Queen of Sheba, a woman reigning over men, a journeyer in search of knowledge, appears through verses of love inspired by the Canticle of Canticles and the Elegy by poet Léopold Sédar Senghor.

Written more than two thousand years ago, Fragments of joy is a sensual dream that transcends taboos through the power of poetry and imagination.
